Oxygenated organics in the tropopause region - kinetics and mechanism of formation.

Grant Award

Principal Investigator:
Dr RA Cox, University of Cambridge, Chemistry
Science Area:
None
Overall Classification:
Atmospheric
ENRIs:
Pollution and Waste
Global Change
Science Topics:
Tropospheric Processes
Abstract:
A laboratory study is proposed to provide quantitative kinetic and mechanistic data on the oxygenated products formed from OH-initiated oxidation of selected n-alkanes, ketones and alcohols at low temperatures. A photochemical steady-state flow reactor with GC analysis will be employed to determine relative rate coefficients from product yields. The data will aid in answering specific questions relating to the chemistry influencing photochemical ozone production in the UT. Information on formation of low volatility hydroxylated species will aid in accounting for the large organic component observed in aerosols in the UT, which may be significant for the formation of contrails and the radiative forcing by clouds and aerosols.
