- Abstract:
- We propose to use existing satellite aerosol extinction measurements of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) to identify, for the first time, different cloud types. This will advance previous studies of PSCs from satellite, which have used aerosol extinction to detect the presence or absence of PSCs, but have not distinguished cloud types. Cloud types will be distinguished by exploiting the dependence of the extinction coefficient on the ratio of wavelength to particle size. The limited number of coincident lidar/in situ/satellite measurements of PSCs (such as during the SOLVE campaign) will be used to validate our retrievals. We will also consider the effect of particle non-sphericity on the extinction coefficient. The output of this work will be 'finger prints' of different cloud types and maps of cloud type for several winters in the Arctic and Antarctic.
