Abstract:
The influence of the quasi biennial oscillation (QBO) on the interannual variability of northern hemisphere (NH) winter polar vortex temperatures will be studied using a stratosphere mesosphere model and a GCM. The primary aim is to determine mechanisms for influence of the equatorial upper stratospheric wind distributions on the amplitude and frequency of stratospheric sudden warmings. Sudden warmings are the primary source of variability in NH winter and substantially affect the amount of ozone transport and chemical loss in winter. The influence of tropospheric feedback on this QBO/winter vortex relationship will be examined and the role of QBO/solar cycle interaction and upper stratospheric cooling will be explored.
