Abstract:
The goal of this project is to make the first satellite identification of the changes in atmospheric aerosol and gas concentrations associated with aircraft pollution. To achieve this an aerosol microphysical model will be coupled to a chemical transport model of the stratosphere and used to accurately quantify the heterogeneous reactions and chemical changes associated with aircraft emissions. The model will be used to identify the regions of the atmosphere where the strongest effects occur. Existing (SAGE II) and new satellite instruments (MIPAS & HIRDLS) will be used to examine these regions and so verify atmospheric modification by aircraft pollution.
