Abstract:
While there is considerable discussion of possible instability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and its global impacts, observations indicate substantial change is already occurring in one area - Pine Island and Thwaites glaciers and their basins. We propose to employ Autosub to investigate the conditions in the cavity beneath the Pine Island Glacier ice shelf, to address questions that currently inhibit understanding of the causes and mechanisms of the change, and which prevent formulation of meaningful models of ice sheet evolution. Autosub's unique capabilities will allow us to make the first direct measurements of, the newly exposed bed of a retreating ice-stream, the water flushed from beneath the grounded ice sheet, and the underside of an ice shelf near the grounding line.
