- Abstract:
- We propose to study the interaction between the ice shelves and the waters of the continental shelf in the south-east Pacific sector of Antarctica. The waters there are the warmest of any that come into contact with the ice sheet, and the ice shelf melt rates are the highest recorded in Antarctica. We will investigate how the warm water gains access to the sub-ice cavities, the heat flux that it carries beneath the ice, how and where that heat is given up to the ice shelves and the impacts and fate of the resulting meltwater. The results will allow us to narrow the uncertainties in our predictions of the response of the Antarctic ice shelves to past and future climate change.
