Abstract:
Following the pilot award under GANE this project will continue the measurement of organic N in precipitation across the UK, using the new protocols for sampling and analysis. The chemical characterisitcs of organic N will be investigated using HPLC. Measurements will also be made of organic N in the aerosol and gas phase, to determine the precursors of DON in rain. Intensive measurements, including measurements of stable N isotopes, will relate organic N to potential source areas. Input of organic N to forest soils will be measured in throughfall. The results will provide quantitative and quallitative information on the contribution of oganic N deposition for comparison with inorganic N deposition as ammonium and nitrate.
