Abstract:
The uncertainty of regional and county scale N2O emission inventories are large. We propose to reduce the uncertainty in the total UK N2O source strength by a combination of empirical and process based modelling with synthesis of data from the literature and related GANE projects. The output will be presented as new spatial maps and tables of total UK N2O emissions. The inventories will be validated by new direct landscape scale N2O measurementss. These will be made using tunable laser spectroscopy in a rural area, a North-South transect from Edinburgh to London and flux measurements from a 70m tower in the centre of Edinburgh using eddy covariance. The source strength of agricultural activities, seminatural land uses, vehicle and industrial emissions will be calculated using forward and inverse Langarian modelling techniques in collaboration with the UK Met Office.
