- Abstract:
- N2O concentrations will be measured in water and sediments along UK estuaries and rivers selected to cover the range of nutrient loading; emission fluxes determined from thin film models and by eddy covariance measurements, and related to other environmental variables (e.g. nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, etc). Rates of formation of N2O in bottom sediments will be measured with 15N labelled substrates, with particular attention to nitrite. The sources of N2O (nitrification/denitrification) will be differentiated using 15N and 18O measurements of N2O. Areas of water surface in rivers and estuaries from which N2O is emitted will be determined from remote imaging. Measured emission fluxes will be used to constrain the estimate of UK output of N2O from rivers and estuaries, and to establish the major factors influencing its formation.
