- Abstract:
- REcent work on the marine niitrogen cycle has broought attention to the DON, PON components of that cycle. Estimates now recognise that the marine DON pool is comparable in size to the marine DIN pool. Annual fluxes of DON, PON from rivers are comparable to the annual atmospheric N-deposition, yet very little is known about the transformations occuring at the frexhwater-marine interface. This study will attempt to understand the biogeochemical -biological transformations and interactions of DIn-DON-PON at the freshwater -marine interface. The apporaoch taken is aaimed at biogeochemical tracers of DON sources and degradation state, DON-PON interactions and biological uptake. The proposed work will involve a suite of interdisciplinary analytical techniques, including HPLC, nnutrient analysis, isotopic analysis and incubation experiments.
