Abstract:
We will acquire a high-resolution, 3D, tomographic, seismic dataset over the buried Chicxulub impact crater in Mexico. This impact has been associated with mass extinctions and environmental change at the end of the Cretaceous; it provides a unique opportunity to advance understanding of the dynamics of large impact craters. The survey is centred upon the proposed ODP drill site into the peak ring; it is required for final site selection and for subsequent interpretation of the cores. Major targets include the boundary between the outwardly collapsing central uplift and the inwardly collapsing slumped blocks, the thickness and extent of the impact melt sheet, and the inner edge of the collapsed transient cavity.
