Abstract:
Contrary to conventional wisdom, plants can take up substantial amounts of organic nitrogen such as amino acids, potentially eliminating the need for mineralisation. Our team of arctic ecologists, modellers and soil scientists will construct a model of soil N fluxes and plant uptake of both DON and DIN which will enable us to explore the dependence of plants on soil DON under conditions where both input of anthropogenic inorganic nitrogen, and temperature, vary. The model will be parameterised for both arctic taiga and temperate grassland. A modest experimental programme will derive Q10s for amino acid mineralisation; we have the other parameter values. The model will clarify the importance of DON to plant/soil systems, provide an input to mechanistic models of N cycling in soils, and aid prediction of impacts of N deposition on sensitive communities.
