- Abstract:
- This consortium will calibrate, model and interpret satellite magnetic data, and use them to draw inferences about the structure of and internal processes taking place in the Earth. A new generation of magnetic satellites are returning data of unparalleled quantity, quality and accuracy. The important sources of magnetic field, including the Earth's core, lithosphere, magnetosphere, lithosphere and oceans, all contribute to the observed field, but to date have generally been modelled separately. For optimal use of the data, this is no longer sufficient. Further, certain sources also affect the calibration of the satellite instruments, thus changing the very data used for modelling. We bring together UK experts in each field, supplemented by overseas experts in satellite data reduction and modelling, and in oceanic motional induction, to unravel the complex origin of the observed magnetic field, and to apply the derived field models to investigate the structure and dynamics of the Earth (in particular, flow in the core and the oceans, and the structure of the lithosphere), to improve predictions of the field, and to extend the comprehensive modelling programme, producing a parameterised magnetic field model to represent all magnetic sources.
