- Abstract:
- The programme is addressing how the climate system is controlled in the subtropical North Atlantic Ocean. At present, it is unclear as to the extent of subtropical warming, how nutrients are transported and cycled within the subtropical North Atlantic, and the rate at which the ocean uptakes or outgases carbon dioxide. These objectives will be addressed in an inter-disciplinary programme evaluating the heat, nutrient and carbon transports across 36?N and 26?N in the North Atlantic. A full hydrographic and biogeochemical survey across 36?N will be conducted, which will complement UK supported surveys along 26?N and 20?W. Integrated transports and divergences of heat, nutrients and carbon will be evaluated by melding the observations with an inverse model. The controlling processes will be identified by taking targeted biogeochemical observations and their wider impact assessed by integrating circulation and biogeochemical models. Training will be provided for postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate students in state-of-the-art sampling strategies, data analysis, inverse and circulation modelling, and inter-disciplinary teamwork for oceanographic research. The programme will strengthen the UK capability in climate research, by providing an observational basis for understanding how the subtropical North Atlantic Ocean is evolving, and thus complementing the strength of the UK in climate prediction.
