Abstract:
The deep interior plays an essential role in the Earth system. The whole Earth convects, and this convection controls the chemistry, composition, and physical conditions everywhere. Interdisciplinary studies of the boundary layers are the key to understanding these processes: in the deep Earth we know more about D' (the bottom 250 km of the mantle), the inner core boundary, and the top of the core, than we do about the rest of the core and lower mantle, and they play a key role in Earth evolution. We propose to shed light on these deep interior processes through interdisciplinary studies linking (a) geochemistry of core formation, ab initio calculations of core composition, core thermal evolution, core density, and geomagnetic studies; (b) mantle mineralogy, D' seismic and electrical conductivity studies; and (c) geodynamic modelling of the mantle, D' and the geodynamo.
