- Abstract:
- Mustard gas contaminated soil contains a toxic micture of mustard and its derivatives, thiodiglycol, dithiane, thioxane and sulfonium ion polymers, that has changed little over decades of contamination. The soil contains indigenous bacteria that have adapted to tolerate and degrade these compounds. By elucidating the diversity and functionality of these populations, coupled with chemical analysis and assessment of site parameters, we will construct a model (physical, chemical and microbiological properties) to determine the potential for microbial degradation. This information will be used to identify the chemcial and biological processess that affect contaminants and target manipulations to optimise microbial degradation. This information can be incorporated into a risk-based framework, with the potential for long-term management or intervention (remediation).
