Abstract:
The epizoic bivalve Lissarca notorcadensis is one of the most abundant species in Antarctic waters and has colonised the entire Antarctic shelf and Scotia Arc Islands. We will investigate its colonisation success and population structure by using DNA sequence data from mitochondrial (e.g. 16 S, COI, CytB, D-loop) and nuclear (ITS-1/2) regions. From these we will estimate the level of variation for each region of DNA and select polymorphic regions for further analysis. The analysis of these genes will also confirm whether the studied species is truly monophyletic or consists of cryptic species. The more polymorphic regions will allow us to examine the spatial genetic structure of specimens collected from different Antarctic locations.
