Abstract:
Atmospheric iodine chemistry is the subject of increasing research interest, however assessment of the potential for iodine chemistry to lead to the destruction of atmospheric ozone or formation of new particles is hindered by a lack of critical photochemical parameters. Laboratory experiments will be performed to measure the absorption cross sections of two recently identified iodine oxide species, I2O2 and OIO, which are central to gas-phase iodine chemistry in the marine boundary layer. A high-performance UV-visible absorption spectroscopy system will be constructed using a CCD detector to achieve microsecond spectral acquisition rates, and used together with existing laser and microwave radical generation methodologies to study I2O2 and OIO photolysis. This data will greatly improve our understanding of atmospheric iodine chemistry.
