Abstract:
My aim is to develop a novel combination of trace metal proxies, which can answer the hypothesis of iron fertilisation in the glacial Southern Ocean. Iron fertilisation of marine productivity in the Southern Ocean has received particular attention as a mechanism for carbon dioxide draw-down and cooling during glacial periods, and as a potential solution to the threat of global warming. A second aim is to refine our understanding of trace metal proxies. This study will address biogeochemical controls on the relationship between trace metals and nutrients in the ocean. Our current reliance on empirical calibrations of trace metal proxies appears short-sighted. I propose to use this culture experiment to work towards developing a model for the biological mechanism of trace metal incorporation during biomineralisation.
