Abstract:
The majority of marine benthic invertebrates have a complex life cycle with a planktonic larval phase and adult benthic phase linked by a settlement event. Such open marine populations experience large spatial and temporal variability in settlement/recruitment which may have important implications for local population dynamics. However, the way in which recruitment variability interacts with post recruitment processes such as predation and competition is not understood. This project uses manipulation of recruitment and post recruitment processes in a typical and easily studied benthic invertebrate to examine the role of density dependence in controlling adult population dynamics under differing physical conditions over a range of temporal and spatial scales. Simultaneous hierarchical sampling of recruitment variability places small scale experiments into context.
