- Abstract:
- Embryology, the study of development, plays a pivotal role in unravelling the evolutionary history of animals and provides a causal explanation for the underlying events. Although the fossil record should be integral to this endeavour, a dearth of developmental data has led to a strictly circumscribed role for palaeontology. Our discovery of two new konservat-lagerstatten that yield fossil eggs and embryos provides an opportunity to test assumptions regarding the role of development in early animal evolution that are based exclusively upon studying living animals. Not only will our material allow us to uncover the embryogenesis of early (rather than merely primitive) metazoans, but the presence of late stage fossil embryos will allow us to constrain more fully the phylogenetic significance of this material to understanding the evolution of animal development.
