- The project hypothesis is that two closely related seal species, the harbour seal and they grey seal, exhibit critical differences in innate immunity that are exacerbated with contaminant exposure. These species from sympatric populations in the UK and observations during epizootics indicated very differing disease susceptibilities. The innate immune system is crucial in successful defence against infection and yet almost no details are known about this aspect of immunity in marine mammals. The proposed research will comprise (i) assessment and comparison of innate immune parameters in the 2 named species (ii) in vitro immune assays to test whether exposure to contaminants significantly alters immune activity and (iii) the provision of baseline data on contaminant-immune interactions in seals and its interpretation in the light of long-term field studies.
