Abstract:
Accurate information for vertical profiles/spatial distributions of greenhouse gases is a key area where new measurements can contribute significantly to improve accuracy's for radiative forcing calculations and hence global warming predictions (IPCC 2001 recommendation). This proposal targets observations from the MIPAS instrument on ENVISAT due to be launched in the summer of this year. It provides an excellent opportunity for obtaining the required data for gases such as H2O, CH4, N2O, O3, and halocarbons/HCFC-22 from calibrated, infra-red spectra at moderately high spectral resolution. Key outputs will be a detailed assessment of radiative transfer characteristics of these gases and validated global concentration fields.
