Abstract:
A study is proposed that will examine the feedback between convection in the Earth's mantle and fully evolving rigid tectonic plates. Dramatic changes in plate velocity are recorded in the geologic record (for example, the bend in the Hawaiian Island seamount chain indicates that the Pacific plate rapidly changed its direction approximately 43 Ma) but the forces responsible for the velocity changes are not well understood. The work described herein proposes that changes in plate direction may occur as a result of the feedback between internally heated mantle convection and tectonic plates. To investigate this hypothesis, a parallelised computer code will be utilised to make high resolution 3D convection modelling with tectonic plates feasible.
