Abstract:
What factors influence co-operation vs. conflict when organisms interact, and what is their relative importance? An important idea has been that genetic relatedness will promote co-operation, but in structured populations relatives are also likely to compete. Recent theory suggests that resource competition will over-ride genetic benefits, but this theory is largely untested. I will provide direct experimental evidence for the relative importance of genetic benefits, material benefits and material costs. The unique developmental biology of Copidosoma floridanum, a parasitic wasp with structured populations, extreme polyembryony (clonal development) and soldier caste production, allows these influences to be experimentally separated and tested. Evolutionary conflicts will be quantified by caste allocation ratios and by soldier attack behaviour.
