Abstract:
Study of the long-term relationships between climate, weathering, and atmospheric CO2 would be greatly enhanced by the existence of records of temperature, seawater Ca concentration, and PCO2 derived from the same material. The Ca and B isotopic composition of sedimentary carbonate, coupled with Mg/Ca, may provide such information, but we need more information concerning their controls to use them effectively. Variability of Ca and B isotope fractionation during carbonate biomineralisation will be assessed experimentally and through environmental samples. Records of Ca and B isotopes spanning the Cenozoic will be constructed and used, in conjunction with Mg/Ca records of temperature, to reconstruct Ca, and if possible, pH and PCO2.
