Abstract:
The proposal is concerned with the development of a novel high resolution (spatial resolution of mm's and temporal resolution of Hz's) integrated CFD sediment transport model for the prediction of both suspended and bed load sediment. The unique aspects of the methodology are i) the scheme will be constructed within a dynamic porosity algorithm preventing the need for adaptive meshing, and; ii) the sediment transport component will be driven off time dependent hydraulics. PIV will be used to validate the CFD component. The proposed scheme will allow a novel methodology for understanding the interaction between flow, sediment transport and form in gravel bed rivers. Furthermore, the importance of an improve process representation of the near-bed flow structures for understanding many ecological processes in the benthic system, will be explored.
