Abstract:
Recent research suggests that peatland streams act as significant conduits of soil-derived CO2 loss to the atmosphere that are unaccounted for in global carbon emission estimates. This proposal aims to develop an understanding of the processes regulating this emission flux and estimate the importance of CO2 evasion from peatland surface waters at national (UK) and global scales. It comprises four distinct work packages incorporating field measurement at a network of six sites in the UK and Finland, laboratory simulation, 14C analysis, modelling and up-scaling.
