Abstract:
Extinction is a process that plays a pivotal role in generating the patterns of biodiversity on our planet. Evidence now indicates that we are in the early stages of a mass extinction event (the sixth in the planet's history) that can be uniquely attributed to a single species, Homo sapiens. Through conservation biology, the environmental sciences provide a framework to both study the processes that underpin this phenomenon and guide our successful management of it. The focus of my NERC Fellowship is to enhance our understanding of contemporary extinction processes, primarily through the achievement of two aims: (1) the identification of the causal pathways that connect extinction phenomena at the local and global scales, and (2) the elucidation of the extent to which differential extinction risk can be attributed to intrinsic species traits, extrinsic anthropogenic activities, and the interaction between these two. This work will enhance our understanding of past and present extinction processes, and our ability to develop effective conservation practice on the basis of sound ecological science.
