Abstract:
The dynamics of the stratosphere has been the subject of an intense research activity, mainly stimulated by concern about ozone depletion and aircraft pollution. Modelling stratospheric dynamics proves particularly challenging, however, because of the large range of scales involved. In numerical models, the unresolved, small-scale processes must be parameterised, i.e., modelled heuristically. This requires physical models of these processes, and techniques to estimate their large-scale effect. Stochastic models and averaging techniques will be used to examine and parameterise two small-scale processes crucial for stratospheric dynamics and chemistry, namely the mixing of chemicals by turbulence, and the dynamics of internal gravity waves.
