Abstract:
Air quality over the UK and Europe is affected by many factors. Dispersion and photochemical processing of local emissions control ozone (O3) episodes. These are built upon a seasonally varying background, determined by global-scale processes. Long-range transport of O3 and its precursors (NOx, CO, CH4 and volatile organic compounds) allow emissions from the rest of the world to affect European O3. Climate change, and depletion /recovery of stratospheric ozone will also influence future air pollution. Global chemistry-climate models can quantify such impacts. Development of a model version with a nested high resolution Europe will allow detailed simulations considering global and local processes in a single, consistent model.
