Abstract:
Despite their widespread use as geochemical proxies for isotope source tracing studies, the nature, context and limitations of archaeological teeth are often unacknowledged or misunderstood, and an ensuing lack of sample standardisation makes comparative data difficult to find. Assumptions made about uptake, retention and post-mortem integrity of Pb and Sr are not supported by oral biological theory, or by empirical osteological observations, or by isotope and concentration data from modern and archaeological teeth. Consequently, the analytical sample is not always valid and an irreplaceable resource is wasted. This project will address and remedy these uncertainties by bringing together results and theory from oral biology, geochemistry, environmental and archaeological sciences to inform and improve the interpretation and accuracy of tracer applications.
