Abstract:
Earth system models require effective parameterisations of small scale biological, chemical, and physical processes to be used for climate studies. Many of these processes take place within the boundary layers of the atmosphere and ocean but are not completely understood. A series of coupled ocean/atmosphere boundary layer models are constructed to simulate observations of chemical tracers. The temporal and spatial patterns of variation in tracer concentration place constraints on the uncertain coupled transport and chemical processes. Where possible, optimisations are carried out to evaluate sources and sinks of biogeochemical species that are difficult to measure directly.
