Abstract:
My previous work has described a system of vocal dialects in sperm whales that groups the sampled South Pacific population into five vocal 'clans' based on the usage of social vocalisations called 'codas'. This discovery has major implications for understanding sperm whale population structure. Here I proposed to continue investigating these implications with a three-pronged research program. Firstly, I will relate dialect variation to genetic variation using data collected from 15 years research in the South Pacific; I will also use this data to explore the fine scale questions of coda usage. Secondly, I will initiate in collaboration a study of sperm whales in the Mediterranean to compare vocal variation with the Pacific. Thirdly I will work with Canadian scientists to develop a dynamic hydrophone array for the purposes of relating individual to group vocal repertoires.
