- Abstract:
- Recent observations of extreme small-scale geochemical variability in mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) show that melt mixing does not homogenise basalt before eruption. This variability presents problems for the interpretation of small-volume basalt samples in terms of the bulk properties of large volumes of mantle and requires a reappraisal of the role of melt mixing at mid-ocean ridges. The aim of this project is to use high density datasets to quantify the length-scales of geochemical variability present in MORB and to determine the extent and location of mixing of mantle melts. These indicators of mixing will be related to geophysical images of magma chambers at ridges and linked with physical models of mixing in convecting magma chambers.
