- Abstract:
- Uncertainty and geometric complexity in the natural environment has hampered the application of numerical models of shallow water flow to estuarine and floodplain systems. This research aims to tackle the problem of uncertainty in incorporating environmental data into numerical models, without recourse to computationally intensive Monte Carlo methods. The resulting techniques will represent a move away from deterministic modelling towards stochastic approaches, whereby model parameters and predictions are described by probability distributions and correlation functions. The interactions between stochastic models and uncertain validation and calibration data, especially those derived from remote sensing, will also be investigated.
