- Abstract:
- Understanding the modes of operation of the Earth's climate syatem depends on successfully identifying and quantifying the interactions between the continents, oceans, atmosphere and biosphere. The aim of this research is to decipher some of the mechanisms that operate on the Earth's environment on millennial, orbital and tectonic timescales, and to distinguish these processes from the catastrophic change that may occur during large volcanic eruptions, or meteorite or comet impact. By exploring the mechanism of past climate change, it is hoped that the consequences of present human activity can be better understood. These areas are linked by their demand for precise isotopic and elemental measurements on very small length scales in geological and environmental records and, derivation of the timing and rate of change of Earth systems, using high-precision chronology.
