Abstract:
We will establish a dedicated facility for analytical work aimed at characterising deep crustal fluids and understanding their behaviour during a range of geological processes. The specific items purchased will be: (i) laser ablation-ICP-MS optimised for analysis of fluid inclusions, (ii) Ion chromatograph for analysis of halogens in inclusion fluids, (iii) multicollector TIMS for analysis of sub-nanogram samples of Sr and Pb and for 238U-234U-230Th measurements. We will investigate the sources of fluids involved in ore formation, diagenesis and regional deformation, track fluid flow paths in the crust and use data to model mass transport and the causes of precipitation and dissolution in hydrothermal systems throughout the crust.
