Abstract:
Many day-to-day work tasks in offshore oil and gas fields, such as inspections, maintenance and survey, involve the use of Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs). As part of normal working procedures there are significant periods of 'stand-by time' during which the ROVs are not used. There is potential to use this time for scientific research. New experimental approaches in deep-sea research require much greater access to ROV technology. We propose a workshop to bring together prime movers from the oil and gas industry and ROV operators to plan a project with firm commitments for CONNECT B funding (June 2003). Financial leverage will be considerable. Scientific tasks will include experimental approaches for hypothesis testing, video and photographic surveys for environmental monitoring, sample collection for biodiversity studies and stunning images for public outreach.
