Abstract:
The EU and the Italian health and environmental authorities are jointly funding a major study (EMECAP) of the impact of fugitive Hg emissions from chlor-alkali plants. One of the facilities to be used in this study is a Differential Absorption Lidar, which can measure Hg concentrations remotely. The measurements are provisionally timetabled for the fortnight 30/6/03-11/7/03. To calculate the flux of Hg emitted, however, wind speed measurements will also be required. I have been developing a portable 1.5 micrometers Doppler Lidar for atmospheric boundary-layer measurements and this Lidar should be able to provide these. I propose hiring a small van, packing my Lidar in it and driving to an EMECAP site near Leghorn in Italy for two weeks of joint measurements.
