Abstract:
The Southern Ocean is of global importance due to its role in the thermohaline circulation, sea ice, climate, and ecosystem processes. It is also typified by a marked paucity of data, especially during winter and in regions of heavy ice cover. ARGOS-linked conductivity/temperature/depth (CTD) instruments on marine mammals are potentially cost-effective tools for collecting real-time oceanographic data from such regions. We will deploy instruments on 20 adult southern elephant seals at South Georgia prior to their winter migrations to frontal systems within the Antarctic Circumpolar Circulation (ACC) and the sea ice zone. The approach will provide extremely useful information for oceanographic, ecosystem and climate studies, and is a valuable complement to existing methods. Global oceanographic programs and the drive toward operational oceanography are significant future applications.
