Abstract:
Climate models predict increased precipitation in the arctic as global warming progresses but are subject to error because of incomplete representation of physical processes and problems of downscaling. The hypothesis that precipitation increases with air temperature on the local scale will be tested by determining annual snow accumulation over the past 30 years in a key region of the Canadian High Arctic at the centre of recent climate warming. Annual accumulation will be obtained from a network of density and gamma radiation profiles measured by a new ice geophysical logging system and by conventional analysis of ice cores.
