Abstract:
Matching support to funds committed by the Atlantic Frontier Environmental Network (AFEN) of oil/gas companies operating on the Atlantic continental margin and Geotek Ltd is requested to analyse a third set of benthic samples taken in 2000 in a cruise funded by DTI from a depth transect on the W Shetland Slope. The transect is strategically sited to monitor natural variability so that impacts on deep-sea bed biodiversity from industrialisation of this physically dynamic and unusual deep-water area by oil/gas activities and deep trawling can be better resolved. The transect was previously sampled in 1996 and 1998 on cruises commissioned by AFEN. The objective of the work, with support from other stakeholders including museums and other academics, is to clarify trends emerging from analysis at Dunstaffnage of the earlier samples by continuing the W Shetland Slope time series.
