- Abstract:
- We propose to develop a novel telemetry system for use with coastal marine mammals which may be used to answer fundamental biological and conservation questions. Argos satellite telemetry systems suffer from low data rates and location accuracy at sea, sub-optimal energy efficiency and high cost. Our dual development addresses these problems. The phone tag uses the extensive GSM mobile phone infrastructure to relay data from an animal when it returns within coastal GSM coverage in between offshore trips. Fastloc is a hybrid GPS sensor that can, almost instantaneously, capture UPS satellite data streams that are then processed and compacted for storage or subsequent re-transmission. These data can be then post-processed to provide 'GPS quality' locations. Performance Trials will be undertaken as part of a study of juvenile grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) behaviour and survival.
