Abstract:
Unravelling the stratigraphic record is of fundamental importance as it is a primary indicator of evolving Earth surface processes. To this end, we propose to investigate sediment supply, a poorly quantified first-order control, by integration of novel mathematical models of drainage basin evolution, clastic deposition and tectonic processes. We will address the following: 1) Inherent variability of sediment supply due to drainage basin evolution; 2) Response of drainage basins and sediment supply to extensional faulting and climatic variations; and 3) How sediment supply variation is expressed in basin margin stratigraphy and whether this signal can be deconvolved from eustasy/tectonics.
