Abstract:
Studies of past climate change are increasingly motivated by the need to evaluate climate models. Results from these palaeoclimate models can be used to help locate economically important minerals, such as oil. However, there is a need to develop new methods to quantitatively evaluate the models, and to make optimal use of their capabilities for predicting palaeoenvironmental conditions. We are proposing to incorporate ocean chemistry within the Hadley Centre ocean-atmosphere climate model and to perform detailed evaluation of the model predictions of the mid-Cretaceous. If successful, this work will have a considerable number of applications, related to industry and the climate change debate.
