Abstract:
The diversity of rickettsia from Scottish and Irish episodes of salmonid rickettsial septicaemia will be assessed by comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences of isolates and those of rickettsia infecting bivalve molluscs. In addition to existing isolates in our collection, fresh isolates of Piscirickettsia salmonis will be obtained from disease outbreaks in Scotland and Ireland. To determine whether an invertebrate vector is likely in transmission of the disease three model invertebrate systems will be challenged with rickettsia to determine whether replication occurs and whether this could be a route of transmission between fish.
