- Abstract:
- We shall carry out a large-scale 3D tomographic seismic survey over a quadrant of the buried Chicxulub impact crater in Mexico. This impact has been associated with mass extinctions and environmental change at the end of the Cretaceous and it provides a unique opportunity to advance understanding of the mechanics of large impact craters. Major targets include the geometry of the central uplift, the ratio of melt to suevitic breccia, the geometry and lateral extent of transient cavity collapse, the volume of the excavation cavity, and the nature of the peak ring.
