Abstract:
Ocean-atmosphere interactions and feedback mechanisms are key problems that need to be quantified in order to understand the role of the oceans in atmospheric chemistry and global climate. The proposed study involves many of the world's best practitioners in an at sea intercomparison of micrometeorological techniques for the direct measurement of the rates at which gases cross between the oceans and the atmosphere and vice versa. The results of the study will improve understanding of the applicability of micrometeorological techniques in the marine environment and of the mechanisms controlling air-sea gas exchange, thereby improving our ability to simulate biosphere-climate interactions. The conclusions of the study will be of interest to a wide range of scientists and policy makers ranging from those concerned with local biogeochemistry to global climate studies. Our particular contribution to the consortium effort will be to make gas exchange measurements using the relaxed eddy accumulation and gradient flux techniques which will be intercompared with those being made by eddy correlation.
