Abstract:
The aim of this application is to obtain funds to support a post-doctoral scientist for two years. The project will investigate theoretically and experimentally new situations for the flow of granular media, which is of considerable relevance in the Earth Sciences. The study will build on recent experimental research by the applicant on the way an initially cylindrical container of grains collapses onto a horizontal boundary. The study will examine the new phenomena introduced when the collapse takes place into water (rather than air) or into a very viscous fluid like oil or down an inclined plane. The project will derive and solve new governing equations to describe the flowing granular material in a way that incorporates the rapid transition between flowing granular material and the final static deposit, as observed in the experiments. The results will be applied to various situations of industrial and geological concern. Additional matching funding is being requested from the Isaac Newton Trust in order to make this a two-year position.
